About the author
Mansel Jones has been researching and writing about medieval history and the history of Kenfig for the past forty years. He is an acknowledged expert in his field and his views are sought by academics and universities. He lives near the abandoned medieval town of Kenfig, the inspiration for much of his writing. He is the author of A History of Kenfig, Pendragon and Tangwstyl.
Tangwstyl is a story of love and murder, of loyalty and betrayal. Set in the medieval town of Kenfig in the year 1399, the story centres on a prophecy made by Merlin and the birth of a girl, named Tangwstyl. Based on historical fact, Tangwstyl tells the story of King Richard and a plot to assassinate him, of Owain Glyn Dwr and his struggle for personal and national justice, and of the medieval Church and its desire to suppress all forms of heresy. Tangwstyl also tells the story of the common men and women of Kenfig, ordinary people caught up in extraordinary events, events that would alter long held beliefs and reshape lives.
The Prophecy From an English Chronicle - The Welsh habit of revolt against the English is an old-standing madness...and this is the reason the Welsh, formally called Britons, were once noble crowned over the whole realm of England; but they were expelled by the Saxons and lost both the name and the kingdom. The fertile plains went to the Saxons, but the sterile and mountainous districts to the Welsh. But from the sayings of the prophet Merlin they still hope to recover their land. Hence, it is that the Welsh frequently rebel, hoping to give effect to the prophecy.
The Main Characters
Euros - Euros is a lord who returns from a pilgrimage to discover that revolution is in the air and that the common men and women of Wales are poised to take up arms against the English Crown in their fight for justice. Born of an English father and a Welsh mother Euros must reconcile his loyalty to the English Crown with his love for Anest, a woman who believes in Merlin's prophecy and the need for revolution.
Anest - Anest is a healer. While the men and women of the castle indulge themselves to excess, Anest has to tend to the needs of the wider community. Despairing at the degree of suffering she encounters she realises that drastic action needs to be taken. When she is told of Merlin's prophecy - that the man who fathered Tangwstyl is to be their saviour - she sets out to find that man.
King Richard. Mistrusting his friends and suspecting his enemies, Richard is on his way to Ireland to quell a rebellion. As he journeys he discovers that treason resides at the heart of his court and that soon a usurper will claim his crown.
Owain Glyn Dwr. Loyal to the Crown, yet not welcome at Richard's court, Owain Glyn Dwr is made aware of Merlin's prophecy. Denied justice by the Crown, should he stand by the king or should he lead the rebellion?
Tangwstyl A Medieval Mystery edition by Mansel Jones Romance eBooks
Tangwstyl is foretold to be the daughter of the second Arthur. On her birth, people of Wales began waiting for their savior's return to claim his daughter and to free them from the rule of ruthless and uncaring kings. The story has little to do with Tangwstyl herself. She is a mere infant during the eight days that unravel throughout the story. Instead, it's a story about a plot to kill King Richard by those disgruntled who didn't receive the rewards the kind promised. The author successfully weaves in the lives of land-owners, peasants, and clergy to give an accurate picture of what it would have been like residing in a medieval village. It's filled with historical facts, and even the fictional aspects are so well blended in that the story itself seems real--making history come alive.
Wonderful descriptions fill the book. The author takes as much care crafting the words of the story and writing the actual plot itself. It's a complex plot of murder and beliefs. It takes place in a world dominated by the Catholic church, but on the verge of reform.
This is an author I wouldn't hesitate to buy another historical novel. I've learned so much.

Tangwstyl A Medieval Mystery edition by Mansel Jones Romance eBooks Reviews
Tangwstyl is the daughter of the second Arthur and it is her arrival that sets in motion events that were prophesied by Merlin. Although this is a fictional work, there is such wonderful attention to detail and accurate portrayal of the living conditions and political influences of the time that it seems to be a part of history recounted. There must have been a lot of research gone into this story and it shows by its excellence.
I loved the diversity of the characters and the way their lives impacted on the whole. Each one has something to offer and it makes for a rich and fulfilling read. There are good people and bad people but they are not black and white but many shades in between, making them real. This is a book to be savored again and again.
A fascinating story based on historical fact I highly recommend this book to historical fiction fans and those interested in medieval England.
Rich descriptions of life in a medieval settlement really brought this piece of history to life. The author clearly knows his subject inside out and is able to fully immerse his reader in the time period without any let up of the pace of the story. With a strong sense of place and time, villains to hate, heroes to cheer for and political shenanigans around every corner what could be a dry history lesson becomes an exciting read.
King Richard plans to stop at Kenfig Castle on route to Ireland unaware his hosts are plotting to assassinate him. Their preparations attract the attentions of Cardinal D'Orso on his search for heretics adding another thread of subterfuge and betrayal. Woven into the story is the birth of Tangwstyl believed to be the daughter of the second Arthur as prophesied by Merlin.
I thoroughly enjoyed this read and will be reading this author's other work Pendragon in the near future.
This is really not a very good story. It starts with the birth of a girl who's father will supposedly be the savior of the Welsh, this is largely forgotten when the storyline picks up a plot to kill King Richard, then the Pope's emissary arrives to sniff out heresy, several more subplots arise until you begin to wonder where this story is trying to go. And this is only halfway through the book. The characters are stereotyped and lack depth. Some of the details are wrong for tIme the story was supposedly taking place. You know something is bad when you are not even tempted to read the ending before giving up. I'm not sure that anything short of starting from scratch can save this.
Nuturing by the infant's caregiver, as well as protection of the young man by the rangers gave it a perspective that appealed to me and balanced the ruthless and greedy people
A well crafted medieval adventure fantasy. I enjoyed reading this story, and the way the author tells a story, inter-weaving history, fantasy and intriguing plot, that will keep you turning pages until the very end!
An good story which will please historical fiction and fantasy fans - recommended!
This book evoked a good sense of the period. The plotting was intricate and intriguing. I did not care for the saccharine love scenes or thoughts of one person about the desired partner. Overall, I enjoyed the book. I love the feature on that lets you click on a word to get a definition. It is especially helpful in historical mysteries. I found out that a bailey is the outer wall of a castle. Though the term "inner bailey" was also used in the book.
A well told tale of mystery and murder. The border lords were sent to hold the the borders for the English king. Some tried to govern with a level hand others leached every last coin out of the people they were sent to govern. Historically the border lords were tough and usually fighting men, often landless knights rewarded with these outposts against conquered people. Extremely well done, this is an excellent tale of the state of things on the Welsh border. The detail takes you into the time and the various elements of the story are woven together like one of the tapestries of the times. Great book. Excellent job.
