It's a pity no one wrote a review for this fantastic dictionary. It's not a habit of mine to write reviews at all.I've lost count of how many Chinese dictionaries that I purchased over the years. Yet I still keep my eyes out for a Chinese dictionary that can answer my needs to learn Chinese characters. This dictionary turns out to be very good for someone who's trying to learn Mandarin Chinese writing at intermediate level.
The dictionary contains more than 3000 most frequently used Chinese characters, one character for each entry. The entries are ordered according to pinyin. There is a radical index in the front section.
The head of each entry is a single Chinese character in large font, enclosed by a color rectangular box. It stands out in the page so well. If there is a traditional version of this character, it will be listed next to it in the brackets; otherwise the character is used in both simplified and traditional formats. It is followed by pinyin, stroke count and radical. There is stroke order for the head character, few dictionaries implement this. Each stroke is shown one by one, but due to poor choice of color intensity, it's a little bit hard to distinguish individual stroke from overall character template.
The entry is clearly sub divided according to number of different meanings for the character. Each meaning comes in Chinese first, then English later. This is an interesting feature that I haven't found in other dictionaries. There are plenty of concise example sentences or phrases, together with pinyin and English translation. Compound words for the character are clearly shown in color, followed by pinyin and English meanings. No example sentences for compound words; it seems a lot to ask for this feature, would make the dictionary much thicker. The author also managed to list compound words where the head character is not the first character in the compound, no meaning is given, and you have to look them up in other entries in the dictionary using the provided pinyin.
The paper used is exceptional thin and high quality. The book has around 1000 pages, it's still thin enough to carry around, also very easy to open flat on the desk without having to force it down. You somehow have to find ways to protect the soft cover. I give it 5 stars because it is in many ways better than other dictionaries, not because it's perfect. Is there such thing as a perfect dictionary? I'm still looking.
